Why it's never to late to start (or return to) Ballroom Dancing

“It is never too late to be what you might have been."

– George Eliot

One of the most common questions we hear at MarShere studios is "Is it too late for me to learn how to dance?"  The simple answer is "Absolutely not!". While for many things we do in life there are "conventional age ranges" that people undertake activities and milestones in their life but ballroom dancing does not have to be one of them. We have students who have started to learn to dance at 5, 15, 55, 75... it truly is an activity that people of any age can enjoy and succeed at. Here are a few reasons why you should give ballroom dance a go later in life.

It's a fantastic way to meet people

It's no secret that the older we get, the harder it is to meet people with similar interests particularly when we work busy careers, have children or our children are grown. It's even harder if you've recently moved to a new area or have split up with a spouse or significant other. Social dancing is the perfect place to meet new people and create lasting friendships. MarShere social classes are open to dancers of all ages and levels and provide opportunity for you to meet and socialise with new people in a friendly and welcoming environment.

Adult lessons available at all levels from beginner through to advanced

With many activities and dance styles, beginner lessons seem to be aimed at children - not so with ballroom dance! While we do have some fantastic kids classes available in our studios across Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula, we love teaching adults! Our teaching methodology has been developed over several decades to help adults learn Ballroom, Latin, New Vogue and Street Latin dances and our friendly and qualified ballroom dance teachers will help you achieve your dance goals. There is no reason to feel nervous or embarrassed because you are surrounded by others who are the same skill level as you and are learning right along with you.

You have more time later in life

When you're younger it often feels like there is never enough time to do the things you want to do, with career pressure taking the focus during your day and then family and social activities taking up each evening and weekend. Many of our older students tell us they always wanted to learn how to dance but it was put on the back burner because they were too busy doing everything for everyone else. Our studios offer a wide range of group classes during the evening and on weekends, but many teachers have day time availability for private lessons. You could even get together a group of friends and organise your own lessons at a time that works for you.

Dancing helps you get you fitter

Are you wanting to improve your fitness, but the thought of going to the gym sends a cold shiver down your spine? Ballroom dancing is well known for being the perfect antidote for the gym blues. Work on your cardivascular fitness, without even realising it, work up a sweat while having a chat and a laugh with wide range of people and improve your memory & mental health at the same time. Dance helps build not only physical development in areas such as strength, coordination and balance but also helps improve memory, neuroplasticity, improved cognitive skills and visuospatial processing.  Recent studies have even shown benefits in dance based therapies to patients with Parkinsons and Alzheimers diseases.

Dancing is fun

The biggest reason our students tell us they come back though is, "that it's fun". Our dance classes are designed to be fun, at MarShere Dance Studios, you'll enjoy a relaxed and friendly approach for both the first time dancer and the dancing enthusiast. When you learn to dance at MarShere Dance Studios, you will have the opportunity to learn a variety of dance styles. Whether you are interested in Latin Dance Classes, Salsa Dance Classes, Ballroom Dance Classes, Argentine Tango Dance Classes, New Vogue Dance Classes or something completely different, you will have fun learning it with us.

You're never too young, old, inexperienced or unfit to start dancing.  A range of classes from beginners to advanced means you'll fit right in without feeling overwhelmed or trying to 'keep up'. You don't need to bring a partner, as there is always a mix of people, and plenty of fully qualified staff at each of our classes! Some of our dances are progressive dances in which you change partners, and other dances allow you to dance with the partner of your choice.
